Enough with the gable wars already!  When will the contest to see how many gables we can have facing the street on every home in every sub-division in America end?    It started out innocently with just a few dormer gables and then evolved into what I call “gable wars”.  There is a gable over the garage door facing the street,  a gable on the opposite side to mirror the gable over the garage door,  a couple of dormer gables and then a few more because the house next door has the same number.

It’s a cancer growing on the homes of America and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight.  Soon, I am sure; there will be pre-fabricated dormers that we can drop on every roof at will so that we can have that one extra gable. 

When will we stop, take a breath and say, “you know what, let’s get back to the basics”.  Let’s think before we build.  Let’s put an end to the sprawling development of what I call “Big Ugly Houses” (BUH).  Let’s think about design and architecture.

I know what you’re thinking.  “It’s not my fault”, it’s the developers fault.  Guess what?  You’re buying the “big ugly houses”.  As long as there is a demand, the “gable wars” will continue.  Stop! Think! Design!  And then build.
